Stuffed Deep Dish Pizza Pie
Ingredients:
1 lb Italian sausage mild or spicy, casing removed
1 small onion, finely diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 14 oz can crushed tomatoes
1 tsp dried oregano
tsp crushed red pepper flakes optional
tsp salt
tsp black pepper
1 refrigerated pizza dough or homemade
1 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
1 cup shredded provolone cheese
cup ricotta cheese
cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 egg, lightly beaten
Fresh basil or parsley, for garnish optional
Directions:
Preheat oven to 400F 200C. Grease a 9-inch deep-dish pie pan or springform pan.
In a skillet over medium heat, cook Italian sausage until browned. Drain excess fat. Add onion and cook until translucent. Stir in garlic, cook for 1 minute.
Add crushed tomatoes, oregano, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Simmer on low for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Roll out the pizza dough and line the prepared pan, allowing excess to hang over the edges.
Layer half the mozzarella and provolone on the bottom, followed by the sausage-tomato mixture.
Add dollops of ricotta cheese and sprinkle with Parmesan. Top with remaining mozzarella and provolone.
Fold the dough edges over the top and brush with beaten egg.
Bake for 3035 minutes, until golden brown and bubbly. Let cool for 10 minutes before slicing.
Garnish with fresh basil or parsley before serving, if desired.
