Southern Candied Sweet Potatoes
Ingredients:
4 large sweet potatoes, peeled and sliced into 1/2-inch rounds
1 cup brown sugar, packed
1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
1/4 cup pure maple syrup
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger optional
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Fresh parsley or pecans for garnish optional
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350F 175C. Lightly grease a baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
Arrange the sweet potato slices evenly in the prepared baking dish.
In a medium bowl, combine brown sugar, melted butter, maple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger if using, salt, and vanilla extract. Stir until well combined.
Pour the mixture evenly over the sweet potatoes, making sure they are well coated.
Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes, basting the potatoes with the syrup from the dish every 10 minutes until the sweet potatoes are tender and caramelized.
Garnish with chopped pecans or fresh parsley, if desired. Serve warm and enjoy the rich, sweet, and buttery goodness of this Southern classic!
