Festive Macaron Christmas Trees
Ingredients:
For the Macaron Shells:
– 3 large egg whites room temperature
– 1/4 cup granulated sugar
– 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
– 1 cup almond flour
– Green gel food coloring
For the Buttercream Filling:
– 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
– 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
– 12 tablespoons milk or cream
– 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
– Optional: edible glitter or sprinkles for decoration
Directions:
1 Prepare the Macaron Batter:
1. Sift powdered sugar and almond flour into a large bowl. Discard any lumps and set the mixture aside.
2. In another bowl, beat the egg whites with an electric mixer until soft peaks form. Gradually add the granulated sugar and continue beating until stiff, glossy peaks form.
3. Add green gel food coloring and gently fold to combine.
4. Carefully fold the dry ingredients into the meringue. Mix until the batter flows in thick ribbons when dripped from a spatula.
2 Pipe and Bake the Macarons:
5. Line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats. Pipe circles in three sizes small, medium, and large to create tree layers.
6. Tap the trays on the countertop to release air bubbles. Let the piped batter rest for 3060 minutes, or until a skin forms on the surface.
7. Preheat the oven to 300F 150C. Bake the macarons for 1215 minutes, rotating the trays halfway through. Allow the shells to cool completely before removing them from the baking sheets.
3 Make the Buttercream Filling:
8. In a mixing bowl, beat softened butter until smooth and creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract, beating until light and fluffy. Transfer the buttercream to a piping bag fitted with a small round tip.
4 Assemble the Macaron Trees:
9. Pipe a dollop of buttercream onto a large macaron shell. Stack with a medium-sized shell, add another dollop of buttercream, and top with a small shell.
10. Decorate the macaron trees with edible glitter, sprinkles, or small candies for a festive touch.
5 Serve:
11. Refrigerate the macaron trees for at least 24 hours to allow the flavors to meld and the shells to soften slightly. Serve at room temperature for optimal texture and flavor.
