Savory Classic Patty Melt

Ingredients:

1 pound ground beef

1 onion, thinly sliced

8 slices rye bread

8 slices Swiss cheese

4 tablespoons butter

1/4 cup mayonnaise

1/4 cup ketchup

Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:


Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions and shape them into patties. Season each patty with salt and pepper.

In a skillet over medium heat, cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until they reach your preferred level of doneness.

In the same skillet, add the thinly sliced onions and cook until they are caramelized, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

Butter one side of each slice of rye bread.

On the non-buttered side of 4 bread slices, place a slice of Swiss cheese, a cooked beef patty, a portion of caramelized onions, and another slice of Swiss cheese. Top with the remaining bread slices, buttered side out.

In a clean skillet, grill the sandwiches over medium-high heat until they are golden brown on both sides and the cheese is melted, about 3-4 minutes per side.

While the sandwiches are cooking, mix mayonnaise and ketchup to create a special sauce.

Slice each Classic Patty Melt in half diagonally and serve with the special sauce for dipping.
