Southern Cornbread Dressing
Ingredients:
6 cups crumbled cornbread use homemade or store-bought
4 cups cubed white bread, dried
1/2 cup unsalted butter
1 large onion, finely chopped
1 cup celery, finely chopped
3 large eggs, lightly beaten
4 cups chicken broth or more as needed
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon dried sage
1 teaspoon poultry seasoning
Fresh parsley, chopped for garnish, optional
Directions:
Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350F 175C. Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and set aside.
Sauté Vegetables: In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and celery, sautéing until they become tender and fragrant about 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat.
Mix the Bread Base: In a large mixing bowl, combine the crumbled cornbread and dried white bread cubes.
Add Broth and Seasonings: Pour the sautéed onion and celery mixture over the bread. Gradually add the chicken broth, stirring until the mixture reaches a moist consistency add more broth if needed. Add the beaten eggs, salt, pepper, sage, and poultry seasoning, mixing until well incorporated.
Bake the Dressing: Spread the dressing mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the dressing is firm but moist.
Garnish and Serve: Let the dressing cool slightly, garnish with chopped parsley if desired, and serve warm alongside your favorite holiday dishes!
