Old-Fashioned Bread Pudding with Vanilla Sauce
Ingredients:
For the Bread Pudding:
6 cups day-old bread, cubed French bread, brioche, or white bread works well
2 cups milk
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
3 large eggs
1/4 cup melted butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 cup raisins optional
For the Vanilla Sauce:
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup unsalted butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Pinch of salt
Directions:
Prepare the Bread: Preheat your oven to 350F 175C. Grease an 8×8-inch baking dish. Spread the cubed bread evenly in the baking dish. If using raisins, sprinkle them over the bread cubes.
Make the Custard Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, brown sugar, eggs, melted butter, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg until well combined.
Soak the Bread: Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes, pressing down lightly with a spoon or spatula to ensure all the bread is soaked. Let it sit for about 10-15 minutes to absorb the liquid.
Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the bread pudding is set and golden brown on top. A knife inserted into the center should come out clean.
Prepare the Vanilla Sauce: While the bread pudding is baking, prepare the vanilla sauce. In a small saucepan, combine the sugar, milk, and butter over medium heat. Stir constantly until the butter melts and the sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and a pinch of salt.
Serve: Drizzle the warm vanilla sauce over the bread pudding before serving. Enjoy it warm!
