Classic Croque Monsieur

Ingredients:

4 slices of white bread

4 slices of ham

4 slices of Gruyère cheese

1 cup béchamel sauce see below for instructions

2 tablespoons Dijon mustard

2 tablespoons butter for frying

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese for topping

For the Béchamel Sauce:

2 tablespoons butter

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1 cup whole milk


Pinch of nutmeg

Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

Prepare the béchamel sauce: In a small saucepan, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to form a roux. Gradually add the milk, whisking constantly, until the sauce thickens. Season with a pinch of nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Set aside.

Spread Dijon mustard on one side of each slice of bread.

Layer two slices of bread with ham and Gruyère cheese, then top with the remaining slices of bread to form sandwiches.

Heat 2 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sandwiches and cook for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.

Preheat your ovens broiler. Transfer the sandwiches to a baking sheet and spread a generous amount of béchamel sauce over the top of each one. Sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese.

Broil for 2-3 minutes until the top is bubbly and golden brown.

Serve immediately with a crisp green salad or fries on the side.
