Chocolate Orange Layer Cake

A delightful combination of rich chocolate and zesty orange, this cake is perfect for any occasion, bringing together the deep flavor of cocoa with a citrusy twist!

Ingredients:

For the Cake:

1 cups all-purpose flour

1 cups granulated sugar

cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1 tsp baking powder

1 tsp baking soda

tsp salt

2 large eggs

1 cup buttermilk

cup vegetable oil

2 tsp vanilla extract

1 cup hot water

Zest of 1 large orange

cup fresh orange juice

For the Frosting:

1 cup butter, softened

4 cups powdered sugar

cup unsweetened cocoa powder

2-3 tbsp fresh orange juice adjust to taste

For Garnish:

Orange slices optional


Chocolate shavings optional

Instructions:

1. Preheat the Oven:

Preheat your oven to 350F 175C. Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

2. Mix Dry Ingredients:

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.

3. Combine Wet Ingredients:

Add eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, vanilla extract, orange zest, and orange juice to the dry ingredients. Beat until smooth. Gradually stir in hot water and mix until the batter is well combined and smooth.

4. Bake the Cakes:

Divide the batter evenly between the two cake pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

5. Prepare the Frosting:

In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa powder, beating until combined. Slowly add orange juice to the frosting, adjusting the consistency to be light and fluffy.

6. Assemble the Cake:

Place one cooled cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a generous layer of the chocolate orange frosting on top.

Add the second cake layer and frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining frosting.
