Ingredients:

For the Cake:

– 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

– 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

– 1 tsp baking powder

– 1 tsp baking soda

– 1/4 tsp salt

– 1 cup granulated sugar

– 1/2 cup packed brown sugar

– 1/2 cup melted unsalted butter

– 2 large eggs

– 1 tsp vanilla extract

– 1 cup buttermilk

– 1/2 cup boiling water

– 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips optional


For the Chocolate Frosting:

– 1/2 cup softened unsalted butter

– 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

– 2 cups powdered sugar

– 1/4 cup milk

– 1 tsp vanilla extract

Directions:

1. Preheat your oven to 350F 175C. Grease and line two 8-inch round cake pans with parchment.

2. In a large bowl, sift flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Stir in both sugars.

3. In a separate bowl, whisk melted butter, eggs, vanilla, and buttermilk. Slowly add this mixture to the dry ingredients and mix until smooth.

4. Stir in the boiling water carefully the batter will be thin. If desired, fold in chocolate chips for extra flavor.

5. Divide the batter between your pans and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let the cakes cool for 10 minutes in the pans before transferring to a wire rack.

6. Beat softened butter until creamy. Add cocoa powder and powdered sugar, alternating with the milk, and mix until fluffy. Stir in vanilla.

7. Once cakes are completely cool, frost one layer, then place the second cake on top and frost the whole cake.
