Ingredients:

1 lb ground beef

1/2 cup onion, finely chopped

1/2 cup breadcrumbs

1 large egg

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp black pepper

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

2 tbsp butter, divided

1 tbsp all-purpose flour

1 1/2 cups beef broth

1/2 tsp thyme

2 cups sliced potatoes, parboiled

1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese optional

Directions:

Prepare Hamburger Patties: In a large bowl, mix ground beef, finely chopped onion, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce until well combined. Shape into 4-5 equal patties.

Brown Patties: In a skillet, melt 1 tbsp butter over medium heat. Brown each patty for 3-4 minutes per side until golden. Remove from skillet and set aside.

Prepare Onion Gravy: Add the remaining butter and sliced onions to the skillet. Cook for 4-5 minutes until softened, then sprinkle with flour, stirring to combine. Gradually add beef broth while stirring to make a smooth gravy. Add thyme, salt, and pepper to taste.

Assemble the Bake: Preheat oven to 350F 175C. In a baking dish, arrange browned patties, then layer parboiled potatoes over them. Pour onion gravy evenly over the top, coating everything.

Bake: Cover and bake for 20-25 minutes. Optionally, sprinkle with grated cheese in the last 5 minutes of baking and allow it to melt.

Serve: Serve hot for a cozy, hearty meal that pairs perfectly with steamed veggies or a crisp salad.
