Christmas Eve Chocolate Eggnog
Ingredients:
3 cups whole milk
1 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup sugar
4 large egg yolks
1 cup semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips for a rich chocolatey flavor
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
Optional: 1/2 cup rum or bourbon for an adult version
Garnishes:
Whipped cream or marshmallows
Chocolate shavings or cocoa powder
Ground nutmeg or cinnamon stick
Mini candy cane or chocolate curls for a festive touch
Instructions:
Heat the Milk and Cream: In a medium saucepan, heat the milk and heavy cream over medium-low heat until it reaches a gentle simmer. Remove from heat.
Whisk Egg Yolks and Sugar: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the egg yolks and sugar until the mixture becomes thick and creamy.
Temper the Eggs: Gradually pour a small amount of the hot milk mixture into the egg yolk mixture, whisking constantly to temper the eggs and avoid curdling.
Combine and Thicken: Pour the tempered egg mixture back into the saucepan with the remaining milk. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens slightly and coats the back of a spoon approximately 5 minutes.
Add Chocolate and Spices: Remove from heat and add the chocolate chips, stirring until they are fully melted and smooth. Stir in the vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
Add Alcohol Optional: For a spiked version, stir in the rum or bourbon.
Garnishing:
Serve and Garnish: Pour the warm chocolate eggnog into holiday mugs and top with whipped cream or marshmallows. Sprinkle with chocolate shavings or cocoa powder, and add a dash of nutmeg for extra aroma.
Festive Touch: Garnish with a mini candy cane or chocolate curls for a fun, festive presentation.
