Apple Fries
Ingredients:
– 4 large green apples Granny Smith or similar, peeled and sliced into fry-like sticks
– 1 cup all-purpose flour
– 1/4 cup granulated sugar
– 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
– 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
– 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
– 1/4 teaspoon salt
– 1/2 cup milk
– Vegetable oil, for frying
For the Cinnamon Sugar Coating:
– 1/2 cup granulated sugar
– 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
For Dipping Sauce Optional:
– 1/2 cup caramel sauce or vanilla ice cream for dipping
Directions:
1. Prepare the Apple Fries: Peel and slice the apples into thick sticks, similar to fries. Set them aside.
2. Make the Batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the milk and stir until you have a smooth batter.
3. Heat the Oil: In a large frying pan, heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350F 175C.
4. Coat and Fry the Apples: Dip each apple stick into the batter, shaking off the excess. Carefully place the coated apple slices into the hot oil in batches. Fry for 2-3 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. Remove from the oil and drain on paper towels.
5. Cinnamon Sugar Coating: In a small bowl, mix together the granulated sugar and cinnamon. While the apple fries are still warm, toss them in the cinnamon sugar mixture until fully coated.
6. Serve: Serve the apple fries warm with caramel sauce or vanilla ice cream for dipping. Enjoy the delicious mix of sweet and tart!
